What is 5-MeO-DMT?

It is closely linked to DMT and 5-HO-DMT and is traditionally used as an entheogen in tribal ceremonies in South America.

5-MeO-DMT has gained a lot of popularity in recent years as many anecdotal reports have come to light about its potential as a healing agent. Even mainstream media outlets like Forbes have highlighted the healing potential of this chemical.

Although research on 5-MeO-DMT is limited, some studies have supported this anecdotal evidence. In a recent preliminary study, 42 participants taking 5-MeO-DMT reported lower levels of depression and anxiety and higher levels of life satisfaction and mindfulness. The effects lasted for at least four weeks until a follow-up assessment was completed.

Another study surveyed 362 people who had taken 5-MeO-DMT and found that 80% of respondents reported improvements in anxiety and depression.

What are the effects of 5-MeO-DMT?

The psychedelic effects of 5-Meo-DMT are thought to be primarily due to its potency as a partial agonist at the 5-HT2A receptor. In particular, it shows a high binding affinity for the 5-HT2A and 5-HT1A subtypes. However, not much is known about these interactions, so our understanding of how they lead to the psychedelic experience is currently limited.

5-MeO-DMT is also thought to inhibit the reuptake of the neurotransmitters serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine, but little is known about the role of these mechanisms. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to avoid combinations with SSRIs, SRIs, MAOIs, RIMAs or other substances that act as release agents or reuptake inhibitors of monoamine neurotransmitters (e.g. serotonin and dopamine).
