What is AMT?

α-Methyltryptamine (also known as indopane and commonly referred to as αMT or aMT) is a lesser known entactogenic substance of the tryptamine class[1].

αMT was originally developed by Upjohn in the 1960s.[2] In the Soviet Union, it was briefly used as an antidepressant under the trade name Indopan.[1][3][4][5] Indopan was prescribed in doses of 5 to 10 mg, which is significantly lower than the dose used for recreational effects.

Erowid has received "a handful of unverifiable reports of hospital admissions following the use of high doses (over 60 mg orally) of αMT."[6] In England and Wales, where the drug became popular as a legal intoxicant starting in 2012, there were 22 deaths related to αMT before it was banned in early 2015.[7]

Limited data are available on the pharmacological properties, metabolism and toxicity of aMT, and there is a limited history of non-medical use in humans. It is strongly recommended that harm reduction measures be applied when using this substance.

Chemical properties

αMT or α-methyltryptamine is a synthetic indole alkaloid molecule of the tryptamine class. Tryptamines share a common core structure consisting of a bicyclic indole heterocycle linked to an amino group at R3 through an ethyl side chain. AMT is replaced by a methyl group at the alpha carbon Rα of its tryptamine backbone.

AMT exists in free base form as a racemate of its (R-) and (S-) enantiomers.

Pharmacological effects

The psychedelic effects of αMT are thought to be due to its activity at the 5-HT2A receptor as a partial agonist.

αMT also acts as a release agent of serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine.[8][9] It also acts as a very weak, non-selective RIMA in vitro[10] and in vivo[11], but at usual doses this is probably not very significant (if at all).

Austria: The possession, production and sale of AMT is illegal under the NPSG (New Psychoactive Substances Act Austria).

China: AMT has been a controlled substance in China since October 2015.

Denmark: In 2010, the Danish Minister of the Interior and Health added AMT to its list of controlled substances (List B).

Germany: AMT has been subject to Annex I of the Narcotics Act (BtMG) since January 31, 1993. It is illegal to manufacture, possess, import, export, buy, sell, procure or supply it without a license.

Greece: The possession, manufacture and sale of AMT is illegal.

Hungary: AMT was listed on List C in Hungary in 2013.

Japan: Possession, manufacture and sale of AMT are illegal.

Latvia: AMT is a Schedule I drug.

Lithuania: Since 2012, AMT has been controlled as a tryptamine derivative in the first list of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, which prohibits its use for medical purposes.

Russia: The possession, production and sale of AMT is illegal.

Slovakia: AMT was included in the list of dangerous substances in Annex II, Section 2, in Slovakia in 2013.

Slovenia: AMT appeared in the 2013 decree on the classification of illegal drugs.

Spain: AMT is controlled under the Law on the Prohibition of Certain Goods.

Sweden: Possession, manufacture and sale of AMT are illegal.

Switzerland: AMT and AET are controlled substances specifically listed in Schedule D.

United Kingdom: AMT is a Class A drug in the UK due to the tryptamine catch-all clause.
